What an ideal river should look like – The film

Flood disasters like those on the Ahr are home-made

The catastrophe on the Ahr and other rivers is becoming more and more frequent. The most absurd theories are in circulation to “prevent” such floods. According to many scientists, such floods cannot be prevented; one can only try to mitigate the effects. But there are also bright spots. The river takes what belongs to it. The Ahr also made a suggestion as to how it would flow during the 2021 flood disaster. An important source of life for all life in the river is, among other things, dead wood, which many people have declared “dangerous”.
The ARD report clearly shows the river as a habitat and also shows that, based on current knowledge, the Ahr should have been treated better decades ago.

The ARD writes:
Rivers can be dangerous. This has been shown in the flood disasters of recent years. Often because they themselves are endangered – they have lost their natural state. Most rivers in Germany are straightened, piped or interrupted by dams. This film tells about the residents and the amazing connections in a river that can still be a river of life. Who can flow, shape and rule untamed and self-regulated. This feeds vital nutrients and oxygen into its circulation. Its current forms impact slopes, sliding slopes and gravel banks and at the same time creates biotopes for gravel and weed spawners. A river that keeps riparian forests alive. On its bottom, on its banks and in its moist edge zones, it is home to primeval spring fairy crabs, never-failing little ringed plovers and huge, nest-building catfish.
