Although there are ways to fight online in Brilliant Diamond and Brilliant Pearl, players had to make it through the Union Hall with a limited set of options. Until update 1.2.0, trainers could not set rules or fight with more than one player. Colosseum Battles expand the way players can battle online, bringing the remakes closer to the online features of the original games.
To participate in Coliseum Battles, players simply go to the second floor of the Pokémon Center in any city and speak to the receptionist at the counter on the right. Colosseum Battles can be played locally or online, the latter only available to those with a Nintendo Online membership. Just like in the Halls of Union, link codes are also available to connect with a specific friend. The player who starts the battle can set the rules and type of battle for the lobby.
The main draw of Coliseum Battles is the number of options available compared to the battles that can be held in the Union Halls. These options fit very well with the general approach of Brilliant Diamond and Brilliant Pearl in competitive play, with custom rules that match those present in the game’s Battle Tower. Casual fans can also make use of Colosseum Battles to play against their friends using more lenient rules, such as allowing item duplication.

While Single Battles and Double Battles are available in both Union Halls and Colosseum Mode, Colosseum Battles feature the return of a battle type that made its debut in Generation III. Multi Battles are two Trainers teaming up to take on another pair of Trainers in a Double Battle, with each Trainer sending out a single Pokémon. Multi-fights greatly expand the cooperative options of Brilliant Diamond and Luminous Pearlwhich was considered lacking by some fans compared to previous games.
Single and Double Battles can be played with a maximum of two Trainers, while Multi Battles require two pairs of Trainers. It is currently not possible to Multi-Battle with fewer than four trainers, although Union Halls now support up to eight players as of the 1.2.0 update. Although Colosseum Battles may be expanded with future updates to the game, they are currently the only battle types available to players.
As mentioned, players can set custom rules for Colosseum Battles. It is possible to change the number of Pokémon allowed, whether or not special Pokémon are allowed, whether duplicate Pokémon can be used, and whether a trainer’s team can have duplicate items. Players can also adjust the leveling rules, with the options to set all Pokémon to be level 50, only allow Pokémon up to level 50, or no level restrictions. These custom rules are the same regardless of which battle type is selected.
Although the options here are no different from what has been available in previous games pokemon, Colosseum Mode is still a much-needed feature that helps expand the game’s online options. As in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Luminous Pearl, the battles in the Colosseum have not changed much from the original games. Despite the lack of new features, the return of Colosseum Battles is great for those who want to battle their friends online.
