Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ Voted Best Christmas Hit in UK

Music ‘Last Christmas’, the iconic Christmas song by the band Wham!, has been voted the best Christmas hit in the United Kingdom. The festive classic by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley beat hits by Sam Ryder, Mariah Carey and Kirsty MacColl, among others. Ryder’s “You’re Christmas To Me” took second place, followed by Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

Wham! has been named the UK’s best Christmas song with ‘Last Christmas’ – 39 years after it fell just short of the festive top spot for the first time. The song, written and produced by the late George Michael, was beaten in 1984 by Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’

“The Christmas hit ‘Last Christmas’ has finally risen to the coveted and sought-after top position, which was always the main goal,” band member Ridgeley told Sky News.

“George would now be so happy that after all these years we are finally in the first place for the best Christmas hits. It has always been known that George wrote this song to get that first place, but that has never been realized before,” Ridgeley continues.

In the past week, ‘Last Christmas’ has already been listened to approximately 13.3 million times via popular streaming services, making it officially the most streamed Christmas hit ever during the Christmas week.

The band Wham! broke up in 1986. Band member George Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53.
