Wetter – Offenbach am Main – Placzek: Follow-up care for flood victims can take years – Panorama

Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler (dpa) – The psychosocial support for victims of the flood disaster in the Ahr valley will take years, according to the victim commissioner of the Rhineland-Palatinate state government. You are facing a great challenge here, said Detlef Placzek on Thursday in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Many people are still busy cleaning up and only noticed later, when they can relax, that they need professional help. Placzek announced their accompaniment “also tomorrow and the day after tomorrow”.

“We have to make it clear to people that they are not alone in this dire situation in which they are stuck.” He reported this offer to all relatives of the dead in a letter and also wrote to the injured. He sent a total of 750 letters that arrived earlier this week. In addition to the hotline that is offered, the country also helps with the mediation of therapy places.

Placzek also appealed to insurance companies to deal unbureaucratically with applications from those affected. An insurance company told a victim that it would not be possible to help without the insurance policy that was washed away. “I don’t think you can do that,” he said. He will also make this clear again “very clearly in a conversation with the insurers”.

The number of people who died in the flood disaster in the Ahr valley was 141 on Thursday. In the meantime, 121 dead have been identified, said Florian Stadtfeld from the Koblenz police headquarters. Another 16 people would be missing. The number of injuries was 766. On July 14th and 15th, extreme heavy rain triggered a tidal wave on the Ahr in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate and flooded large parts of the valley.
