Wet and Windy Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain and Snow Expected in Norway Along the Coast and Mountains

AGAIN: It looks dark, dark blue. That means a lot of rain along the coast this evening and Wednesday. Photo: Screenshot Meteorologists

Forget the down jacket, put on something water-repellent. Now it will be splashy weather, especially along the coast in the west. In the mountains to the west, there can be up to half a meter of snow.

A new low pressure is on its way from Scotland. It hits western Norway tonight and southern Norway tomorrow.

Mostly in the west

– Tomorrow there will be precipitation over almost all of southern Norway. Østafjells receives the most precipitation at the start of the day. Western Norway and Trøndelag will receive scattered rainfall throughout the day. In the lowlands, the precipitation will fall as rain, higher up it will snow, Meteorologists write on X.

It will be mostly in the west and at altitude.

– In western mountain areas there is a warning for snow, where 25-50 cm of snow can fall over 300 metres. There is also a danger warning for snowpack in the mountains and closed mountain passes, says state meteorologist Geir Ottar Fagerlid to VG. He believes that people should at least be prepared for convoy driving.

– In the lowlands, much of the precipitation will come as rain.

But here we expected far from as much as in the mountains to the west, namely between 10 and 25 mm over the next 24 hours. Between five and 10 mm is expected in Oslo.

Snow on ice

The snow line will be around 100 metres. This means that a white cover can quickly form over blue-black ice.

– A good amount can fall as snow on top of the ice so that it is hidden. Hidden ice is scary, says state meteorologist Geir Ottar Fagerlid to VG.

– Will the ice in the streets of, for example, Oslo have time to melt before this happens?

– The temperature is a little too low for it to melt enough. The temperature is on the way down from this afternoon, and most likely it will be minus degrees tonight before precipitation arrives.

Fagerlid says that although the precipitation is expected to come as rain along the coast, it is difficult to put two lines under the answer because the weather is so unstable.

The low pressure that is now on its way is not the same storm that has recently ravaged the UK.

– Short-term storm along the Rogaland coast

– But it is a solid winter low pressure. There may be a brief storm along the coast of Rogaland tonight, says Fagerlid.

– We are in a period where – to use a cliché – the low pressures come like pearls on a string.

– Is most of it over by tomorrow morning?

– The worst wind and precipitation will come tonight and early morning, while thunderstorms will affect the rest of the day in Western Norway and in Trøndelag. Northern Norway will get cold and stable winter weather with snow showers on Wednesday and probably more stay on Thursday, concludes Fagerlid.
