Winnings paid out
The total winnings that WestLotto was able to distribute to its gaming participants across all products and prize categories in 2020 is particularly impressive: In 2019, around 790 million euros went to around 51.3 million winners, this figure increased to 838 million euros to 55 million winners can be increased. This means that on a statistical average, every citizen in North Rhine-Westphalia made a profit at WestLotto around three times a year.
Millions of dollars
In 2020 there was a new millionaire in North Rhine-Westphalia on average every two weeks. While there were 21 new millionaires in the previous year, the number of millionaires won at WestLotto rose to 31 last year. They are distributed over almost all regions of the country. A participant from the Dortmund area opened the millionaires at the lottery drawing on January 4th. His lucky tip at LOTTO 6aus49 was also the highest NRW win in this lottery in 2020 with 32.4 million euros.
For the first time, a tipster from NRW was able to win the maximum possible jackpot win of 90 million in the European lottery Eurojackpot for this state. This is the highest lottery win ever achieved in North Rhine-Westphalia. The old record was also a win at the Eurojackpot lottery: In March 2016, a Rhinelander won around 76.8 million euros. There was also an additional, special winning experience for numerous tipsters: In addition to the three jackpot winners in second place, there were 49 players nationwide who each won the six-figure prize amount of 283,811.90 euros in third place. Thus there were 52 big prizes in this drawing, 16 of which went to NRW alone. There had never been so many big winners in a single lottery drawing in the more than 65-year lottery history. The old record comes from the 1990s: the lottery drawing on January 19, 1991 resulted in 48 big prizes (amounts from 100,000 euros) in one drawing.
50 years of the spiral of happiness
There was also a special anniversary in 2020: the Glücksspirale pension lottery celebrated its birthday. Founded in 1970 to finance the Olympic Games in 1972, it has been the most important sponsor of Olympic sport in Germany ever since. In addition, the Federal Association of Independent Welfare Care and the German Foundation for Monument Protection benefit equally. Every week, the Glücksspirale offers the chance of a pension from now on in the amount of EUR per month – for 20 years. In 2020, a participant from North Rhine-Westphalia was also lucky enough to receive such a pension. In August, a tipster from the Cologne area won the pension worth a total of 2.1 million euros.
Second edition of the million dollar hit
In 2019 WestLotto launched the million dollar hit for the first time. Due to the positive response, the million-dollar hit was also held in 2020. At 1: 250,000, it offered the highest chance of winning one million euros that WestLotto has. Four players from the areas of Wuppertal, Krefeld, Dortmund and the Rhein-Sieg district are now starting a hopefully better year in 2021 as millionaires.
A big thank you
With regard to the corona pandemic, WestLotto and its employees also faced many new challenges. WestLotto Managing Director Andreas Kötter: “Special thanks go to our partners, the WestLotto acceptance points. They have mastered the new and difficult tasks not only in the last few weeks, but throughout the entire Corona year. They were able to use hygiene concepts continue their business operations even in the lockdown phases and are reliable contacts for their customers. The way to a lottery acceptance point is usually not far. There are currently around 3,200 WestLotto sales outlets in North Rhine-Westphalia.
And of course the game has become a matter of course in the digital world. Also in the new year 2021!
