The abolition of the toll is a great wish of many Zeelanders. Alderman Van Assche van Terneuzen is very happy with the prospect: “We have long been committed to a toll-free tunnel from the municipality. Because as long as tolls are charged, the tunnel as a crucial connecting route cannot be used freely and optimally. That remains unjust. “
He is convinced that the toll-free tunnel with the aforementioned script is an important step closer. The actual decision has yet to be made. For example, the provincial government believes that the new cabinet still has to arrange a number of things.
Measures
It is likely that environmental and road safety measures still need to be taken, as traffic through the tunnel is expected to increase. The tunnel can only become toll-free once these measures have been implemented. The provincial government wants this to be arranged before 2023.
The NV Westerscheldetunnel, which is responsible for the management and operation of the tunnel, will have to be financially compensated by the central government, according to the provincial government, because of the loss of toll revenue. The province of Zeeland is the operator’s sole shareholder.
