Western “Rust” premieres today – with protest

As: November 20, 2024 11:41 am

After the fatal accident during filming in 2021, the western “Rust” is expected to debut today. But the planned screening at the festival is also causing controversy.

Three years have passed since the accident on the film set, but there is still no peace. Now, shortly before the world premiere of the western “Rust”, the mother of camerawoman Halyna Hutchins, who was killed during filming, is speaking out.

Olga Solovey said through her lawyer that she did not want to come to the screening as a protest. The reason: the American actor Alec Baldwin (66) did not want to apologize and take responsibility for the death of his daughter. “Instead, he wants to gain an unfair advantage from killing my daughter.

The filming continued

Filming, which was initially halted, was resumed in 2023 by director Joel Souza in the US state of Montana. It is expected that the film will be shown for the first time in the world today at the film festival “Camerimage” in Poland. According to the director of the festival, the film will be shown in Torun because camerawoman Hutchins told her friends before the filming started that this was her dream.

A scene with US director Souza is planned. Baldwin actor is not expected. The festival initially announced that Solovey, who lives in Ukraine, would come to the premiere if she could.

Shot with a shotgun

The case caused a stir in 2021 – and then a long legal process. Lead actor and producer Baldwin handled a gun while preparing for a scene. Then a shot went off. Director Souza was hit in the shoulder and injured. Camera Hutchins killed. Later investigations revealed that the Colt contained a real bullet.

Army master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of gun safety on set, was sentenced to 18 months in prison last spring for involuntary manslaughter. The question of how the weapon got alive on the set has not been clarified yet.

Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin have repeatedly denied responsibility for what happened. Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in a separate case. But the process was unexpectedly halted in July.

Set out of court

The cameraman’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, reached an out-of-court settlement with Baldwin and the production company for compensation. But according to Variety, there are alleged irregularities in the payments.

Therefore, the widow and his lawyer should think about filing another lawsuit. Additionally, her parents and younger sister, who live in Ukraine, are filing a civil lawsuit against Baldwin and others involved in the filming of “Rust.” This is about compensation for the pain caused by the death of Halyna Hutchins.
