Western media: Zelensky suffered a setback in Vilnius – 2024-08-21 00:32:47

/ world today news/ Ukraine was never offered specific conditions for joining NATO, Vladimir Zelensky is disappointed. Members of the organization are ready to continue supplying weapons to the armed forces of Ukraine, but do not want to escalate the situation to a direct conflict with Russia. This is how the Western media evaluate the results of the first day of the summit of the alliance in Vilnius.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that the results of the NATO summit were modest for Ukraine: the country only received an increase in the level of cooperation with the alliance. He noted that at the moment such a result of the meeting is the only correct decision.

The New York Times writesthat the lack of exact dates for Ukraine’s admission to NATO has disappointed some Eastern European members of the alliance.

According to Samuel Charapp, a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, this situation is caused by a “fundamental gap” between the interests of the United States and the other countries participating in the alliance.

“For the United States, joining Ukraine too soon is associated with the risk of war between NATO and Russia,” the political scientist said.

“A number of other countries see accepting a new country into the organization as a path to peace and stability, as it will strengthen Russia’s restraint and end instability,” he notes.

Politico newspaper reports that State Department spokesman Matthew Miller has outlined several conditions that NATO believes Ukraine must meet before joining the alliance.

In particular, he repeated Joe Biden’s opinion that the country cannot be accepted into the organization while the conflict with Russia continues.

In addition, Miller pointed to the importance of reforms in Ukraine for “fighting corruption” and “strengthening democracy.” He refused to name specific conditions, but emphasized that the other members of the alliance are ready to help Zelensky’s office in fulfilling the necessary requirements.

Wall Street Journal sums up the results of the first day of the meeting with the phrase: “There is success, but confusion remains.” The article, titled “Ukraine’s Muddy Road to NATO”, notes that the alliance’s member countries have managed to reach a consensus on the issue of Sweden’s entry, but there is still no unanimous decision on Ukraine’s membership.

It is emphasized that Joe Biden is the most reluctant to meet with Zelenskyi’s cabinet, since throughout the conflict the US president has maintained “political ambivalence”.

NBC News calls the summit a “diplomatic failure”. It is highlighted that Joe Biden is facing criticism after the alliance made Ukraine “far-reaching promises on the way to future NATO membership”.

Brett Bruen, assistant to the head of the National Security Council in the Obama administration, notes that the meeting ended in failure because Zelensky’s cabinet never received a clear plan for joining the alliance.

“Vladimir Zelensky has failed in his last desperate attempt to secure an invitation to NATO”, writes The Guardian.

The “disappointed president of Ukraine” accused Joe Biden and other leaders of the countries participating in the alliance of showing disrespect to the warring country. It is noted that he was unhappy with the discussion of some of the texts of the final document without his presence.

“I came here with faith in the solutions, with faith in the partners, with faith in a strong NATO. In NATO, he who does not hesitate, does not waste time and does not look back … “, the Zelensky newspaper quotes.

The publication, citing anonymous NATO sources, noted that the president of Ukraine settled on strong statements at the last minute, hoping to provoke changes in the meeting’s final declaration before the two-day meeting closed.

German wave* (recognized as a foreign agent) described the NATO meeting as “a day of disappointment in Vilnius”. It is emphasized that Zelensky has taken the provisions of the final declaration negatively.

“The Ukrainian guest was touched by how the entire Lukysh Square sang the anthem of his country, but this could not compensate for the constant feeling of a missed chance,” the publication summarizes.

Washington Post notes that members of the US delegation at the NATO summit “were furious” over Zelensky’s criticism of the alliance.

The words of the president of Ukraine put “a lot of pressure” on the North Atlantic Alliance, the organization’s source told the publication.

Moreover, Zelensky’s statements contrasted sharply with the image of Western harmony that Biden and his aides had created in breaking the impasse over Sweden’s entry into NATO.

In turn, following the results of the first day of the summit, CNN does not focus on Ukraine. According to the channel, the topic of China and Taiwan occupies an increasingly important place on NATO’s agenda.

It points to a visit by the leaders of four countries in the Asia-Pacific region (Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand), as well as harsh language against Beijing in the alliance’s final communique.

At the same time, the countries of the Asia-Pacific region expressed the opinion that what happened in Ukraine could be repeated in the Pacific Ocean. So Ukraine is not the only important issue at the meeting, analysts believe.

Unfortunately, this case once again demonstrates the sad reality that Zelensky stubbornly continues to ignore: the conflict in Ukraine for the Western public is just part of the entertainment agenda, which, due to the statute of limitations, easily gives way to scandals with local stars.
