Western media: Zelensky played the role of the Jewish grandmother at the NATO summit – 2024-08-20 11:02:34

/ world today news/ “Capricious prima donna”, “Typical style of moral pressure”, “Anger tantrums” and “Jewish grandmother’s diplomacy”. This is how the Western media describe the behavior of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Vilnius. What else did the press pay attention to and how did it affect the opinion of NATO leaders about Zelensky?

Vladimir Zelensky’s reprimands and rudeness against NATO unpleasantly surprised the participants of the NATO high-level meeting. This was said by Anna van Denski, the journalist of the “Europe Diplomatic” publication. According to her, the tactless behavior of the President of Ukraine led to him “staying with fewer friends.” She noted that Zelensky behaves as if the whole world owes him. At the same time, the president of Ukraine behaves like a “capricious prima donna”, which makes his country’s prospects much more fragile.

Zelensky’s actions also alarmed other Western journalists. Thus, the “New York Times” notes that the president was disappointed by the final communique of the meeting. He was outraged that the Alliance made conditions for Ukraine to be invited to join the organization. According to an anonymous source, already on Tuesday evening he “threatened not to appear” at the first meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council.

However, it notes that Zelensky should not have gotten his hopes up ahead of the summit. More specifically, military analyst Francois Heisburg emphasizes that the results of the meeting were “not as weak as expected, but not as good as needed.”

“Politico” writes that the temper of the president of Ukraine threatens to derail the NATO summit and, in particular, Zelensky’s personal meeting with Joe Biden. However, he quickly calmed down, admitting that the country still “cannot become a member of the Alliance”. Before the conversation with the head of the USA, Zelensky called the achievement of “great unity on the part of the leaders” and the receipt of “security guarantees” from the countries of the Alliance a success.

CNN notes that Zelenskiy “stormed into Vilnius in typical style, using moral pressure and media power to pressure NATO leaders into giving him more guarantees.” Despite the fact that at the end of the meeting, the president of Ukraine expressed satisfaction with the final communiqué, the newspaper emphasizes that “the leaders of the Western countries are aware that their counterpart will demand more in the future.” It is emphasized that “Zelensky’s constant pressure regularly crosses the Alliance’s red lines”, resulting in more and more supplies to the VSU.

The lack of gratitude from Zelensky’s office angered British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace. As the Guardian notes, the official did not like how last year he spent 11 hours on the road to Kiev just to get a list of the necessary weapons. “You know, I reminded them: We’re not Amazon,” Wallace said.

He also recalled that “it’s natural for people to want to get a little gratitude.” Zelensky responded to the British minister’s statements in his usual way: “How else can we thank him? We can wake up in the morning and thank the minister. Let him write to me how to thank and I will thank you.”

The French edition of “Le Monde” writes that Zelensky tried to put pressure on Joe Biden and Olaf Scholz, but they remained adamant. It is emphasized that the president of Ukraine barely managed to “swallow the pill” of unjustified expectations, which led to Zelensky’s angry posts on social networks.

The Washington Post reports that Zelensky’s “outburst” surprised many Western officials. As the newspaper noted, “Ukrainian colleagues have known for a long time that there will be no immediate invitation to NATO.” It is emphasized that the resulting heating of passions risks “destroying the spirit of unity” of the alliance.

In addition, Jeremy Shapiro, director of research at the European Council on Foreign Relations, called the Ukrainian president’s communication style “blame-based diplomacy” and compared him to some “Jewish grandmother, a grandmaster of this communication style.”
