Chile also refused to give in to British persuasion to provide military aid to Ukraine. No government in Latin America wants to stand up to Beijing.
And Western visitors are clearly not behaving as expected. Cleverley was expected to be more diplomatic in his talks with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira, sources told Politico.
An unnamed Chilean official also added that they were “disappointed” that Cleverley had not offered more to predispose their nation.
„If you want to compete with China, you have to pay. You must bring something in return,” the official emphasized.
In addition to Cleverley, European Council President Charles Michel and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have visited the continent in recent months. The baton has now been taken over by German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock, who will travel to Brazil in early June, and Ursula von der Leyen, who will succeed her until mid-June.
Most likely, Berbock and von der Leyen will get the same answers as the others, but Berlin is betting on a trade deal. The EU’s draft agreement with the MERCOSUR bloc, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, has been under discussion for almost 25 years.
Berlin is keen to take a position in the protectionist South American market, which will be the subject of von der Leyen’s visit.
But what does it matter who travels to Latin America if they are all trying to dictate the old colonial rules of the region. A whole crowd of high-ranking officials and diplomats from the Old World cannot in any way understand that Latin America, the Global South and other regions of the planet choose cooperation with Russia and China because the latter are ready for equal and honest cooperation.
This is their competitive advantage, which the West will not have for the foreseeable future.
