Western Digital releases WD Green SN350 NVMe drives priced at $ 100 per terabyte

Western Digital has expanded its solid state drive portfolio with the new WD Green SN350 series. New items are made in the form factor M.2 2280, focused on the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and are presented in volumes from 240 to 960 GB.

The manufacturer classifies the SN350 series NVMe drives as entry-level solutions. The company does not indicate the model of the controller used in them and the memory standard, however, the relatively low declared reliability indicator hints at the use of QLC 3D NAND flash memory.

For the WD Green SN350 models with a volume of 960, 480 and 240 GB, the declared reliability levels are 80, 60 and 40 TB of recording, respectively. For comparison, the models from the relatively inexpensive WD Blue SN550 series of 250 and 500 GB are built using TLC NAND memory, and their resource is estimated at 150 and 300 TB of recording, respectively.

The performance of WD Green SN350 series drives varies depending on each specific model – the older model offers the highest read and write speeds up to 2400 and 1900 MB / s, respectively. IOPS (input / output operations per second) for small-block operations reaches 340 thousand for random reads and 380 thousand for random writes. In general, in terms of speed characteristics, the new items are very similar to the WD Blue SN550 drives, but for the Green SN350 series the manufacturer offers only three years of warranty instead of five.

The company estimated the WD Green SN350 240 and 480 GB models at $ 44 and $ 55. For the older model with a volume of 960 GB, the price is set at $ 100. Thus, new items are on average $ 10-30 cheaper than WD Blue SN550 models of the same volume.
