HOUSTON, Texas – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team (3-7-3, 1-3-1 Big 12) suffered a 2-1 loss at Houston on Sunday afternoon at the Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, Texas.
The Cougars scored first, taking a 1-0 edge in the 25th minute. It didn’t take long for West Virginia to respond with the equalizer though, after sophomore forward Taylor White netted her sixth goal of the season in the 27th minute. Fifth-year senior defender Maddie Moreau fed the ball to White, who was open in the box and squared up to tie the game.
However, Houston responded quickly, scoring at the 32:48 mark on its second corner-kick goal of the match to take a 2-1 lead. Despite six shots from the Mountaineers in the second half, including two on goal, the score stood from there for the 2-1 loss.
West Virginia outshot Houston 11-5, including 4-3 in shots on goal. WVU just edged the Cougars in corner kicks, 8-6. White led the offense with the goal, while Moreau was credited with her second assist of the year and also added a trio of shots in the match. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey added one save on the afternoon.
With the loss, the Mountaineers are now 0-1 all-time against Houston, as Sunday’s match was the two teams’ first meeting in program history. West Virginia is 0-2 against first-time opponents this season.
West Virginia now returns to Morgantown to play host to Oklahoma on Thursday, Oct. 5. It’s the Mountaineers’ Mental Health Awareness Game, and kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
