History

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team finished in a 1-1 draw with Cincinnati on Senior Night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Monday.

Although the Mountaineers (7-7-4, 5-3-2 Big 12) struck first in the 67th minute, the Bearcats responded at the 82:12 mark to level the score line and save the tie. West Virginia took the lead on a Cincinnati own goal, as the UC defender’s attempt at a deflection found its way into the back of the net. From there, WVU would add five more shots in an attempt to find the insurance score, but it was UC who found the next goal to equalize after its first corner kick of the match.

The Mountaineers earned a season-high 13 corner kicks in the match but were unable to put the finishing touches on the set pieces. They held the Bearcats to just one corner kick opportunity, but it ended up being just what they needed to draw level. WVU outshot UC 16-5, while placing five shots on frame. The West Virginia defense held Cincinnati to just three shots on goal in the match.

Junior forward Aria Bilal paced the Mountaineer offense with three shots in the match, while junior midfielder Lisa Schöppl added a pair of shots on target. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey made a pair of saves in the contest.

West Virginia’s record against Cincinnati moves to 2-0-1 all-time, including 1-0-1 in games played in Morgantown, as the two teams met on the pitch for the first time since 2010 Monday night.

Prior to the match, the Mountaineers honored seniors Mackenzie Aunkst, Jaydah Bedoya, Kayza Massey, Maya McCutcheon, Maddie Moreau, Lisa Schöppl and Julianne Vallerand for their years of hard work and dedication to the WVU women’s soccer team.

West Virginia now prepares to open postseason play at the 2023 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Championship at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas, from Oct. 28 – Nov. 4. The Mountaineers earned a first-round bye into the quarterfinals on Oct. 30, but will wait to learn their seeding and opponent in the tournament upon the completion of the final matches around the conference on Monday night.
