Sheriff Ross Mellinger was left with a mystery – until Wanda Palmer woke up from the coma.
When officers entered Wanda Palmer’s Cottageville home in June 2020, they were presented with a terrifying picture. “She was sitting on the couch covered in blood and badly mauled with an ax or machete,” Sheriff Ross Mellinger said. “At first we thought she was dead.” But Palmer survived and was taken to the hospital. However, she was unconscious and fell into a deep coma.

The police investigated and investigated several people, but could not find any leads to the perpetrator. “We had a vague idea of what had happened, but we had no concrete evidence of the perpetrator,” said Mellinger. “There were no eyewitnesses, no surveillance footage, and no cellphone recordings. There was nothing to build on,” he said West Virginia Metro News .

The case threatened to remain unsolved forever. But then last week Mellinger received a call from the clinic that Palmer had regained consciousness. She could not speak because of the brain damage she had suffered, but she could give clear answers to simple yes-no questions. So she was able to identify her attacker to the investigators – her brother Daniel (55). He was immediately arrested and charged with attempted murder and intentional bodily harm.

According to Mellinger, Daniel Palmer III. when attacking his sister “a machete or an ax” and inflicted severe head injuries on her. He offered no resistance when arrested. Nothing was known about his motive. Bail was set at $500,000.
