The FBI said a suspect with an assault rifle was hiding in the bushes at the fence surrounding Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump was playing golf about 400 meters away. A bodyguard from the Secret Service spotted the muzzle of the weapon and opened fire. The man fled in a car and was later arrested on a highway. It was initially unclear whether the suspect also fired shots. No information was given about a possible motive.
Trump said he was safe and doing well. The White House said President Biden and Vice President Harris had been informed. Both were relieved that Trump was unharmed. Biden thanked Secret Service employees for their vigilance. He and Harris stressed that violence has no place in America. Two months ago, Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, in which he was injured in the ear.
