West must show unity to avoid bloodshed

Boris Johnson calls for the West to speak with one voice. In this way he could still prevent bloodshed in Ukraine.

the essentials in brief

  • Boris Johnson calls for unity among Western allies.
  • Preventing the bloodshed requires a demonstration of Western solidarity.
  • One must make clear to Putin the high price of an invasion of Ukraine.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged Western allies in the Ukraine conflict to present themselves as a united front to Russia.

“There is still an opportunity to avoid unnecessary bloodshed,” Johnson said on Friday before his trip to the security conference in Munich. “But that will require an overwhelming display of Western solidarity surpassing anything we have seen in recent history.”

Johnson: Allies must speak with one voice

The conservative politician, who has led his country as one of the leaders of the Brexit campaign from the EU, usually likes to distance himself from “Europe”.

Only the “special relationship” (German: special relationship) to the USA likes to emphasize his government. In the face of an imminent war, however, Johnson now emphasized: “The allies must speak with one voice to make President Putin understand the high price he would have to pay for a Russian invasion of Ukraine.” He is bringing this message with him to Munich, where he wants to speak to several colleagues and intensify diplomatic efforts again.

On the second day of the Munich Security Conference this Saturday, speeches by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US Vice President Kamala Harris are expected alongside Johnson.
