West Indian American Day Parade and Caribbean Community Festivities: Security Measures and Colorful Celebrations in Brooklyn

A celebratory weekend is coming up in Brooklyn with the color of the various festivities of the Caribbean communities.

The festivities culminate with the West Indian American Day Parade on Monday and the Police Department announced its security measures for the event.

Lots of music, dance and colorful costumes from different Caribbean communities will fill various streets of Brooklyn during the West Indian American Day Parade on Monday. The organization of the Panamanian parade is one of the few Spanish-speaking groups that will parade.

“And show that we also have Caribbean and Latin American culture and are very proud Afro-descendants,” said María C. Willis, vice president of the Panama Parade.

The organization of the Panamanian parade founded in 1995 has been participating in this event for more than five years.

“And that’s what we’re doing, spreading our culture, our folklore and our history,” adds Willis.

The New York Police Commissioner, Edward Caban and other representatives of the department announced that there will be thousands of uniformed officers from different agencies guarding the parade and other festivities during the weekend of celebration.

The parade runs through 13 streets that will be closed from 6 in the morning on Monday and all those present will be checked by police officers. Two million people are expected.

In addition, they will have drones and security forces from different Brooklyn organizations.

The president of the West Indian American parade association, Cecilie Ford, said that the safety of all is a priority for the healthy enjoyment of the parade.

The Caribbean community festivities kicked off Thursday with events inside the Brooklyn Museum. It culminates with the big parade on Monday along Eastern Parkway where it has been held since 1969.
