West Ham are close to signing defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes in a £30m transfer.

The 26-year-old posted an emotional farewell to fans of the Ligue 1 club on social media on Saturday. His lengthy message read: “I announce that I played my last match [for Rennes] despite being a difficult decision.

It was good news for West Ham as manager David Moyes identified the centre-back as the next vital piece to make the Irons a top six contender. And the Moroccan now hopes to take his medical with the Hammers before the official announcement of him on Monday.

The deal would make Aguerd West Ham the fourth most expensive signing in history behind Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson and Kurt Zouma. Aguerd, who joined Rennes in 2020 from Dijon, is a full international for Morocco with 25 caps.

He played a major role in their journey to the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals last season and featured in both play-off games against Congo as they secured World Cup qualification.

His arrival in east London comes despite the fact that Newcastle was reportedly poised to hijack the movement earlier this week. Late interest from the Magpies was claimed to have called the move into question, as Aguerd was unable to decide who to join.

But the 6-foot-2 defender is now understood to have made up his mind, as he has been scouted extensively by West Ham recruiting boss Rob Newman. The Hammers are expected to focus on signing a new forward and an additional left-back once the Moroccan is officially signed.
