Edson Álvarez arrived at West Ham United partly thanks to reports from John Heitinga, former Ajax coach.
That is what Hammer coach David Moyes said in a talk with the Evening Standard. Heitinga, a former Dutch player, coincided with Edson at Ajax and directed him as an interim player last year. Since this season he has been assisting the Scot in London, England.
“I met Johnny in the summer a couple of times before I brought him in. I met him a few times, but I also asked him about the Ajax players and what might be there,” Moyes said.
They were not the only two elements that the coach was looking for to relieve Declan Rice, who finally went to Arsenal and left a big hole in the team.
“I didn’t know I was going to end up getting them because they were two guys on our recruiting list. We were interested in signing Joao Palhinha from Fulham and we didn’t get it.
“We were obviously looking at who we could try to get after that. James Ward-Prowse was high on my list no matter what,” he added.

Heitinga gave him details about the Mexican and that helped David make up his mind and bet on his signing. There was also another actor who participated in this transfer and that of Mohammed Kudus.
“But I was able to talk to Johnny about Edson and then about Mo when he started to be considered. Steven Pienaar was also at Ajax and was one of my former players [en el Everton]so I also called him on the phone to ask about them,” he acknowledged.
