18-year-old Sonny Perkins is predicted a promising future. Since the age of 14, he has lived in West Ham’s academy and he has long been seen as the next big name the academy produces for the A-team.
But that will not be the case. West Ham confirm on Sunday night that Perkins will leave the club this summer, when his contract expires. But it is not the usual “We wish him all the best in the future” statement that the London club makes. Without being furious.
In a statement, West Ham said they had offered Perkins several contract proposals, which he refused. Furthermore, his decision and, above all, his representatives are taken seriously.
“West Ham invests several million pounds annually in their world-famous academy and of course it is therefore extremely disappointing to see that Sonny chooses not to continue his journey within the club”, the club writes on its website and continues:
“The club is further disappointed with Perkins’ representatives and strongly believes that he has been contacted by another club, which has led to him ending his journey in West Ham. The club takes this matter very seriously – we believe that rules and structures in English football should maintained at all times “.
West Ham will now receive training grants for Perkins, but will not receive a transfer fee when his contract with the club, as previously mentioned, expired.
