West Bromwich Albion is ready to start discussions with Chris Wilder about the vacant managerial position. The Telegraph reports that Wilder is the man West Brom believes can bring them back to the Premier League next season. Sam Allardyce revealed that he would resign following his 3-1 loss to West Ham United.
Chris Wilder to West Brom: Baggies to hold talks with former Sheffield United boss
Chris Wilder hacia West Brom
West Brom are preparing for life in the Championship again after survival brains Sam Allardyce failed to keep them in the Premier League. Allardyce took office in December, after winning just one of 13 league games with Slaven Bilic.
The task was too much for Big Sam, who for the first time in his coaching career suffered relegation. The Baggies are once again on the market for a manager. Chris Wilder is said to top the list of finalists.
Wilder was, of course, most recently in charge of Sheffield United, where he implemented a rather unique approach. Although playing a back three has been embraced by many in the last decade, Wilder put his own spin on it. In their shot, the wider center-backs push very high when attacking, playing a key role in their attacks. Basically, they are central attackers.
While it is a rogue and audacious tactic, it served Wilder with great distinction at Sheffield United. He enjoyed a highly successful spell with his beloved Blades, guiding them from League One to the Premier League. His success in the championship earned him the LMA Manager of the Year Award in 2019.
Wilder received even more applause for his performances on his return to the Premier League. His unique style of play saw Sheffield United finish ninth in his first season back in the top flight. However, the spotlight didn’t last long, as United became the latest victims of the second season syndrome.
It will be interesting to see if Wilder sticks to his signature style or chooses to implement a new strategy on the Hawthorns. If he accepts the job, he will also face a huge challenge in keeping the likes of Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone, who have been linked to Premier League clubs.
Allardyce not engaged to Albion
Sam Allardyce revealed that he turned down a “generous offer” to remain West Brom’s manager next season. Speaking after the loss to West Ham, he said: “For me, it’s a long-term perspective for someone other than me. I am, as you always say, a man who comes and saves a club, a man who is short-term. I’m happy with that. That is my life during the last years «.
In a statement on the club’s website, he went on to say: “If I were to stay and get promoted next season, the expectation would be for me to continue for at least one more season and sadly that is not a commitment that I feel capable of. to do at this stage of my career «.
Other candidates
While Wilder may be the leading candidate, the Baggies are on the lookout for several potential candidates. Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton is also in the running, according to BBC Sport. Appleton has already enjoyed two stints of training at West Brom; as interim manager in 2011 and as coach of the first team in 2019.
Appleton’s priorities will remain with Lincoln for now, as his team is currently competing in the League One play-offs. They have one foot in the final following their 2-0 win over Sunderland in the first leg.
Sky Sports reports that Frank Lampard is also being considered to replace Allardyce. Lampard has been out of work since Chelsea fired him in January. Super Frank enjoyed a Championship season with Derby in 2018/19, where he guided them to the play-off final.
