West African Countries Impose Sanctions on Niger Coup Leaders

Basoom’s election as president in Niger was seized and ousted by the military on Wednesday. Instead, the Commander of the Presidential Guard, General Abdurrahman Tiani, declared himself as the authority.

Nyemie (Niger): West African countries have imposed travel and economic sanctions on leaders who led the coup in Niger. The countries also stated that they will not hesitate to take military action if President Muhammad Basoome is not returned to power soon.

At a meeting of West African nations in Nigeria on Sunday, President Basumile called for his immediate return to power. Following the military coup, France and the European Union suspended their financial aid. The US has also warned it will stop aid.
