West African Countries Agree on Intervention Plan in Niger Amidst Political Turmoil

The countries of West Africa have agreed on an intervention plan in Niger. The rebels were given time to think until Sunday, informs August 4 RBC.

The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) has announced the possibility of a forceful solution if deposed President Mohamed Bazum is not returned to power.

“All the elements of any possible intervention have been worked out, including… …how and when we are going to deploy forces,” ECOWAS Commissioner for Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah said after a three-day meeting in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

Recall that at the end of July in Niger, the military overthrew the president, and the head of the presidential guard, General Abdurahman Chiani, declared himself the new leader of the country. These events were actively discussed at the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov reported on July 27.

On July 31, the military in Niger announced the cessation of the supply of gold and uranium to France, saying that the country is rich in minerals, but its citizens live like slaves and they no longer need the French.

When ECOWAS heads of state first threatened to send in troops if rebels in Niger did not return Bazum to power, neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali responded by warning that they would regard the intervention in Niger as a declaration of war against themselves.
