Sneijder has major doubts: ‘He doesn’t show it in the big matches’

Wesley Sneijder doubts whether Joey Veerman can make the step to the absolute top. The former midfielder said this on RTL in the run-up to PSV’s Champions League match with RC Lens. Veerman is often praised for his footballing qualities, but regularly fails defensively.
“From a football point of view, he can certainly take a step higher, because he is very good with the ball,” Theo Janssen begins about Veerman. “But he also has lesser things. Every player has that, so does he. The switching, the moments of mourning. But with the ball it is good. He has a good kicking technique.”

“In a good football team, Veerman plays easily,” Janssen continues. “But if he goes to a big club where he has to play football in transition, it will be very difficult for him.”
Sneijder responds to this. “He hasn’t shown it in the big matches yet, Theo.” Janssen (partly) agrees with this. “But I think he can join a team that dominates on the ball. At PSV you don’t often dominate on the ball in big matches. Then it will be difficult for him.”
Sneijder emphasizes that different things are being asked at the top European level. “If he wants to reach the absolute top, he must certainly excel in big matches in the Champions League. You have to radiate that in midfield. In my opinion, he has not shown that enough.”
Janssen wants to see it with Veerman. “Some players are very good in a good team. Veerman will also play a fantastic role in a fantastic team. But if it is a little less, he will also be less noticeable and he will be held accountable for things that are not going well.”
