- The Weser bridges in Bremen have limited traffic according to a new study.
- The mobility senator wants to limit truck traffic.
- According to the authorities, the bridges are to be strengthened in the near future.
Three Weser bridges in Bremen can only be loaded to a limited extent. This was announced by the Bremen Mobility Department. As a result, according to the authorities, truck traffic on the bridges is now limited to 16 to a maximum of 30 tonnes, depending on the bridge. Trams and buses can still use the bridges.
There is an ‘urgent need for action’ on Bremen’s Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge, Mayor Smidt Bridge and Karl Carstens Bridge (strawberry bridge)Mobility Senator Maike Schaefer (Greens) said on Tuesday. “In the near future” the bridges should be strengthened in order to be able to use them for some time.
The reason for the restrictions is also a new calculation basis, Schaefer said. “In that regard, it’s nothing you could have known for years.” The analysis was revived due to the “terrible world accidents”.
When will the traffic be diverted?
The bridges have long been closed to trucks weighing over 44 tons. According to the mobility department, the new restrictions will come into force from mid-December. Signage will also be posted to indicate detours via the Stephanie Bridge or Weser Bridge on the A1.
Heavy goods traffic in Bremen is increasing
“Current demands on road infrastructure are high,” said Rick Graue, director of the Department of Roads and Transportation. “Heavy goods traffic has increased and traffic development forecasts indicate that a further increase can be expected in the future.”
According to information, the Federal Ministry of Transport had instructed the federal states to analyze the load-bearing capacity of their bridges. Many bridges in Germany date back to the postwar years and often have a multiple of what was conceivable in terms of carrying capacity and traffic during design and construction.
