Wes Unseld Jr. approaches the Orlando Magic bench

Wes Unseld Jr. continues in the race to be the next head coach by Orlando Magic. As reported by Shams Charania and Josh Robbins of The AthleticSo far, the Denver Nuggets associate head coach has had a second interview with Florida management, which would put him in the final pool for the job.

Unseld, who has been an NBA assistant for 16 years, has spent the last six in the Colorado franchise, where he has assumed the defensive tactical weight of a team that is in the elite of the competition; not for nothing was he a finalist in the Western Conference in the Orlando bubble.

Despite his long career, for now he has shown himself as an eternal aspirant to make the leap to be the head of a team. In 2019 he was interviewed by the Cleveland Cavaliers, in 2020 he was on the list of the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls, and at present he is also one of the candidates for the Washington Wizards bench. Yes, he is highly regarded in the NBA, but for now he is still waiting for his chance.

Perhaps the good run Denver has had in the last two seasons is the final push. In the 2020-21 season they have lost in the second round of the playoffs, but the loss of Jamal Murray – one of their two stars – is sufficient justification. Fairly speaking of proper names, he has participated in the development of Nikola Jokic, Michael Porter Jr. and the aforementioned Murray. He has credentials to replace Steve Clifford, who parted ways with the Magic by mutual consent.
