Werner Ritter, the brother of farmers’ president and national councilor Markus Ritter, is dead. The lawyer and former long-time central cantonal councilor died on December 19th after a long illness. “His essence was love, his heart was huge and his mind was razor-sharp,” the family said in the obituary. The 58-year-old was a member of the St. Gallen cantonal parliament for four terms from 2000 and helped shape the cantonal hydraulic engineering law, which has been in force since 2010.
Werner Ritter was very well known in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley; He was president of the Pro Spital Rheintal association and was often in public. He was also president of the Association for the History of the Rhine Valley and was involved in the Prestegg Museum in Altstätten. In 2019 he took over the presidency of the museum society.
