Werkendam fire: third dead found | Inland

Emergency services were notified of the fire around 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. The fire brigade turned out on a large scale, with 200 to 250 firefighters and 33 vehicles. The fire spread to an adjacent house and the company where both houses were located above. The residents of the adjacent apartment were able to get away on time.

Although the Security Region suspected that there could be three people in the building, it was not possible to enter for a long time on Sunday. When the heat and collapse danger had passed in the evening, it was deemed safe for emergency services to enter and the victims could be found. The identity of the people found is still unknown. As soon as these are known, the next of kin will be informed.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The heavily damaged building has been propped up somewhat, but entering at around 1.45 pm turned out to be impossible. The fire was still raging then and the flames were in double ceilings. A crane has come to secure the apartment. “The building is still too hot to enter. There was also a wall to be propped up, ”said a spokeswoman earlier in the day.

The director of the company tells Omroep Brabant that the three people who live in the apartment are on the payroll of a company he works with. His offices and part of the workshop have been severely damaged.

Rook

The smoke could be seen far and wide. The property is located in the Beatrixhaven, an inland shipping port. Shipping traffic is not affected by the fire, says a Rijkswaterstaat employee on Twitter.
