“Nice to be home again”

His outstanding debut in the SV Werder Bremen jersey has made triple goalscorer Keke Topp hungry for more. “Of course I want to score goals in the Bundesliga too. Time is on my side. I’m only 20 years old,” said the centre forward after his hat trick in the 3-1 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against third division side Energie Cottbus.
After his brilliant competitive debut for Werder, Topp tucked the match ball under his arm like a trophy and strutted towards the dressing room. “If you score three goals, you should take the ball with you. I’ve never scored a hat trick in professional football. I hope it wasn’t the last one,” said the offensive player.
Topp played for Werder as a youth before moving to FC Schalke’s U19 team in 2021. In June, the young star returned to his homeland for a transfer fee of 2 million euros – he is one of four new Werder signings this summer. “It’s nice to be back home. With my family, with my friends. In my old home, where I know everything. That made it easier for me,” said Topp about his uncomplicated settling-in period on the Weser. He did not want to overstate his performance in Cottbus and instead highlighted the excellent team performance: “I was well put in the spotlight by my teammates. If I hadn’t been passed to like that, it wouldn’t have worked. I’m not a player who can leave two or three opponents standing.”
Coach Ole Werner also tried to put a brake on the euphoria: “Today was the first round of the DFB Cup. It may be that such a young player learns even more in the Bundesliga than he did today. But we are convinced of his abilities.” On Saturday (3:30 p.m.) Topp can also live up to his surname in the Bundesliga. Then Bremen will start the new season at FC Augsburg.
