Werder Bremen has had a disastrous start to the season. With just six points after eight games, the Green-Whites are deep in the relegation battle. The upcoming game against the direct competitor Union Berlin is therefore all the more important – also for coach Ole Werner.
Union is one of four teams that are currently behind Bremen (also Mainz, Bochum and Cologne). After the (defensively) quite appealing performance in Dortmund (0:1), Werder now wants to score points against the Iron Men and at least create a small breakthrough.
A three-pointer against the Berliners would be particularly important, especially with a view to the coming weeks. Werder has to play against Wolfsburg and Frankfurt after the Union game – not exactly walk-in customers.
Coach Ole Werner also knows this, via Bild basically states: “We have to score points, but it’s not a situation where you have to panic. It’s not pleasant. We’re aware of that. We’re in the process of building something up. But that doesn’t happen without setbacks.”
Sea Bild the coach is still firmly in the saddle. The message agrees with this 90min-Information from the beginning of October. Werner continues to enjoy great recognition in the Werder management and with football boss Clemens Fritz, writes the tabloid. Those in charge know that Niclas Füllkrug, the team’s best player, was sold and transfers like Olivier Deman or Rafael Borre only came about late. In addition, star newcomer Naby Keita is currently out injured.
But it is also true that Werder will have to react at some point if the downward trend continues. In the last second half of the season, the development curve was clearly pointing downwards (17th place in the second half of the season).
That’s why Clemens Fritz says: “We are aware of where we are. We have dropped points this season.” With a view to the Union game, Werder’s football boss emphasizes: “It’s a very important game, you just have to look at the table.”
