At newly promoted SV Werder Bremen, the squad for the new Bundesliga season is already being worked on intensively – and Mitchell Weiser also plays a key role in this. The loan player from Bayer Leverkusen is known to remain on the Weser after June 30th, corresponding talks have already taken place. According to information from our Deichstube, the transfer is on the home straight, completion could soon be reported.
Werder also had to make a fundamental decision in the case of Weiser. As he was not vaccinated, the full-back was in quarantine several times last season and was therefore not always available. This problem could be repeated in autumn if a new corona wave rolls up, as in previous years. But at Werder it is assumed that the restrictions on unvaccinated people should no longer have such serious consequences. Therefore, a commitment by the full-back was basically nodded by those responsible.
In terms of sport, there was no doubt about a future with Weiser anyway. The 28-year-old was one of the top performers in the second half of the season and was particularly strong offensively. He also knows the Bundesliga very well, having played 140 games there for Bayer Leverkusen (53), Hertha BSC (70), FC Bayern Munich (16) and 1. FC Köln (1).
Werder is not possible without a salary cut by Weiser
As a participant in the Champions League, however, Bayer no longer has any use for the winger and, according to reports, would even give him up for free. Four years ago, Leverkusen paid a transfer fee of twelve million euros for Weiser to Hertha BSC. Now the Rhinelanders are only concerned with not having him in the squad in his last year of contract and getting him off the payroll.
It is said that Weiser earns almost four million euros a year. He also got that last season, but almost 90 percent from Leverkusen. As a second division club, Werder only had to pay the rest. Bayer really wanted to get Weiser playing again so that there would be a permanent change.
That’s what it looks like now. However, Weiser also has to play his part – financially. It will not work without the player sacrificing his wages. But Weiser should feel so comfortable in Bremen that a solution seems possible. In terms of sport, Weiser would certainly be an asset for Werder, but the risk would remain due to the uncertain development of the corona pandemic.
