Werder Bremen makes six and escapes relegation thanks to Union Berlin

Werder Bremen was on the verge of collapse on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM, but has miraculously escaped relegation to the Second Bundesliga. The national champion and cup winner in 2004 had to win against 1. FC Köln and did so with conviction: Davy Klaassen and his colleagues won no less than 6-1. Fortuna Düsseldorf lost at Union Berlin and became the child of the bill.

Werder Bremen was two points behind at number 16 and had a significantly less goal difference, but managed to bridge both differences. After half an hour of play, it was already 3-0 against Köln, which played for nothing: Yuya Osako got the ball in front of his feet and opened the score, Milot Rashica soloed to 2-0 and also Niclas Füllkrug punished half-heartedly defending the opponent.

Union Berlin was also already safe, but in the meantime did its sporting duty and helped Werder Bremen a hand. The Bundesliga debutant took the lead after just under half an hour via Anthony Ujah, a former player of Werder Bremen. After half-time, routine Christian Gentner signed for the 2-0, after which Düsseldorf mentally snapped. In the last minute it even became 3-0: the guests did not even bother to defend and the substitute Suleiman Abdullahi was able to finish the Bundesliga debut season of Union unhindered in style.

Weerder Bremen refueled in the second half for the playoffs against the number 3 of the Second Bundesliga, probably 1. FC Heidenheim. Klaassen signed for the 4-0, Osako made his second of the afternoon and Josh Sargent completed half a dozen. It didn’t matter anymore that Dominick Drexler had made another goal.
