Werder Bremen’s 2-1 away win at 1. FSV Mainz 05 left a bitter aftertaste. At the start of the match, attacker Justin Njinmah (23) injured his ankle and had to leave the field early. As the Green-Whites announced on Monday afternoon, the offensive player will be out for four to six weeks with a ligament injury.

Dominik Kohr fouled Njinmah, who with a market value of 9 million euros is the most valuable Werder player after Romano Schmid (24) and next to Marvin Ducksch (30), in the penalty area. Ducksch converted the resulting penalty to give Bremen the lead. Njinmah was then replaced by new signing Marco Grüll (26). On the first matchday against FC Augsburg, Njinmah had to make do with the role of joker, but his goal to make it 2-2 meant that he was allowed to start against BVB and Mainz.

“Bad news for us, but especially for Justin. After his long absence at the end of the season, he was just getting back to 100 percent. We will give him the best possible support on his way back to the pitch,” said Ole Werner. Njinmah made his breakthrough last season when he scored six goals and provided two assists in 24 games. He increased his market value by more than ten times.

Bremen will also have to do without captain Marco Friedl, who was shown the red card in the 60th minute after an emergency tackle on Jonathan Burkardt. The length of the suspension has not yet been confirmed, but the Weser team is expecting it to be for two games.
