Bremen – An unusual action by the media department made it clear how deep the sting of disappointment at SV Werder Bremen was after the 2:3 home defeat against Holstein Kiel. The club called on its fans via Twitter on Saturday to get rid of their frustration and anger in a so-called “f*ck list” and thus unintentionally publicly pilloried their own team.
In any case, the “virtual suggestion box”, as a club spokesman defended the action, was full to the brim, which after the shock in the ascent race little surprised. Even Clemens Fritz as Werder Bremen Head of professional football in conversation with the DeichStube admitted the day after the severe setback: “Nobody had a quiet night. We all thought about how this could have happened.”
Werder Bremen went into the game as the front runner after the 4-1 win over Schalke. And because the favorites were already in the lead after 22 minutes thanks to goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch (penalty), everything seemed to be in perfect order. But it wasn’t! On the right-hand side of defense, the defense continued to be poor, and the necessary access was also lacking in the middle. Holstein Kiel was invited to score before the break. The fact that Fulkrug unluckily got the ball into his own goal seconds before the half-time whistle fitted into the picture. After the change there were good chances to restore the old gap, but the goals came from the other side. Anthony Jung equalized with Bremen’s second own goal (71′) and Julian Korb (85′) scored the winning goal.
Werder Bremen under extreme pressure: Direct promotion no longer possible on your own?
Grün-Weiß was shocked in the Wohninvest Weser Stadium, which was sold out with 42,100 spectators. After the final whistle, the question marks boomed. Why did Werder Bremen this secure leadership and this huge opportunity for three important points in the ascent race just take? “There’s only one answer for me: We were too careless, especially after the 2-0 lead!” said Fritz: “But overall we didn’t play well. And if you drop another one or two percent because after the 2-0 you think it will work itself out, then something like that can happen. But you have to constantly bring your performance to the pitch, and that includes aggressiveness and intensity.” Fritz was with his criticism But it’s far from finished: “I also missed that togetherness that made us so strong at Schalke. We’ve broken out of tactical order too many times. This performance must annoy us all, it must not happen to us! We put on too much pressure for the next few games because we gave away points.”
Schalke, who won in Sandhausen in the last second, drew in the tabel past the Bremen team again. Darmstadt 98 have a chance to slip past with a win against Aue late on Saturday evening. Which would mean before the last two matchdays: I can do it on my own Werder Bremen not directly rising up. And beware! Hamburger SV have stalked and, like the ailing FC St. Pauli, are only three points behind Werder.
Werder Bremen: The defeat against Holstein Kiel left its mark on the players
It’s no wonder that there’s a fear on the Weser that the dream of a direct return to the 1st division will turn into a nightmare. Because after the successful weeks under Coach Ole Werner a failure in the final sprint would really hurt. The defeat against Holstein Kiel did not go unnoticed by the Werder pros. “The players have made up their minds,” reported Fritz of the team’s meeting with the coaching team on Saturday morning: “Ole clearly addressed the mistakes in the analysis. We’ll let that sink in now, and from Tuesday the focus will be on Aue.”
At the table penultimate wants Werder Bremen head back up on the rollercoaster ride through the season on Sunday, May 8th. “We need an intensive training week for that, we have to sharpen our senses. I’m convinced that the team can do it, we’ll be there in Aue!” Fritz promised as a precaution. The ex-professional likes to give encouragement, after all that is also part of his job profile. Two days before the end of the season, frustration must not defeat confidence. The “f*ck list”, in which a large number of Werder fans signed themselves – and behaved surprisingly well-mannered by Twitter standards, should also help. (knee)
