Frankfurt/Main – Amos Pieper sat on the lawn of the Frankfurt European Championship stadium and fought back tears. After more than half a year of injury, the Werder Bremen central defender’s comeback in the Bundesliga ended with an injury.
“He took a hit to his ankle and is in pain. He can still go. It’s not like he was on crutches,” said head coach Ole Werner.
The 26-year-old defensive player, who had to be substituted in the 51st minute, experienced the wild second half and the 1-1 draw between Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder, including two dismissals, from outside. Pieper broke his right ankle in October and was out for months. It initially remained unclear whether the injury on Friday evening was related to this. “I can’t say all that yet,” said Werner.
