Wendy (37) is working hard with her finances. She is facing more and more expenses that she finds far too high. She talks about that one expense, which she is really ashamed of.
When I started doing business, not everyone was amused. especially mine vader he said it wasn’t smart to give up my regular job. How did I put it on my head? I knew it was the right choice for me, but his reaction made me feel even more compelled to challenge myself. I can’t fail, this had to be fine.
As an insecure, novice entrepreneur, I scoured the internet. I have been following some people on Instagram for some time, who in addition to being a business coach are also successful entrepreneurs. I approached a female coach with whom I had been in contact for some time. After a personal call, I joined a semi-annual trial for € 10,000. Lots of money.
I’m embarassed
At first it felt good. There were personal conversations, group calls and lots of online chat contact. At first it was very intense, but later it decreased more and more. I noticed that we didn’t even make a plan together for my company, but that the conversations remained mostly on the surface. It didn’t help me as an entrepreneur. I just got confused about it.
The results weren’t forthcoming and I even felt a little ripped off. I haven’t reached those so-called great heights as an entrepreneur. What I did with that coach, I could have done alone. The only difference was that I had a significant expense, because I was paying in monthly installments. I had to work hard for it and didn’t dare tell anyone.
The idea of fast money
To be honest, I was blinded by the idea of making money fast. I also wanted to be “successful” and have tons in the bank. But that’s not fair. And besides, success doesn’t just depend on money.
And yes, of course I want a company that makes me really happy. I really enjoy being independent, but I can spend more time on it. And maybe I need to learn how to manage money before I start earning a lot. There is definitely a lesson (or an annual trajectory) in this.
Business coach or not? What I have learned
I’m not saying it’s bad to invest in a business coach. I know there are a ton of great coaches out there who really help entrepreneurs take their business to the next level. Do you have a good feeling with someone and are you looking for more guidance as an entrepreneur? Go there I would say. Although some coaches charge a lot of money, if you do it outside, it’s a good investment.
But my advice is not to do it too fast as a beginner entrepreneur. Allow yourself to have fun with your business. You are not version 2.0 of yourself, you need to try the experience first. Also, don’t start a conversation with someone out of uncertainty, as these coaches are often great salespeople. Only consider if you feel more confident as an entrepreneur and just need a little more direction. So you also choose the right person and then go much further.
