/ world today news/ The current dispute over Greece’s national debt could turn into a catastrophe for Europe if none of the parties to the conflict make concessions.
This is written in today’s edition of “Welt am Sonntag” on the occasion of the parliamentary elections in the Balkan country, where the victory of the Coalition of radical left forces SYRIZA and its leader Alexis Tsipras is expected.
“The Greeks want debt forgiveness, the eurozone partners resolutely reject this possibility. If no one gives in, then Europe will suffer a catastrophe,” writes the German publication.
“Two sports cars are competing”, figuratively described the situation “Welt”. “The one who slows down or stops first loses. The monetary union is about to fight the biggest psychological war in its history – the battle for the Greek national debt. The outcome is unpredictable,” the publication wrote.
“The first car is driven by Tsipras, who is likely to win the election. He wants significant debt relief and a reversal of the austerity course to ‘save the Greeks from a humanitarian disaster’. In the other car, the pedal is pushed by international creditors. They are against the debt write-off and insist on reforms. It is important for both sides in this risky game to endure. Whoever shows fear first will lose. Then an unfortunate accident will happen – Greece will leave the eurozone with unpredictable consequences for the entire currency union,” concludes Welt am Sonntag. /TASS
