Timon Wellenreuther once again proved to be a reliable closing post for Feyenoord on Sunday. After the cup win against NEC, the German was asked about the remainder of the season.
Justin Bijlow is fit again and was on the bench during the cup final, so trainer Arne Slot is once again faced with the choice between him and Wellenreuther. “Of course I want to stay standing, and I will do my best to do that,” Wellenreuther said at the press conference on Sunday evening. ‘It is only the trainer who decides.’
Wellenreuther again kept his goal clean in De Kuip. “I don’t know,” he replied when asked if he was in his best shape. ‘I’ve been the clown before in my career, so I’m glad I’m not that now. For the rest it doesn’t matter much to me. I am very happy with how we are playing now and with the team how we communicate and play together. It’s really nice to be part of that.’
The former Willem II goalkeeper, who is in the interest of PSV, had the cup in front of him during the press talk. ‘I am very happy with this, especially considering how difficult it was today. I’m for making saves. I’m happy with how my defenders did and also how the rest of the team defended.’
Slot
“We can at least conclude that we have two main goalkeepers,” Slot responded to the goalkeeper issue on Sunday. ‘Timon has been very important to us since he came in. It’s not that NEC had many chances, but he was there those few times. It’s something that’s been going on with him for weeks. We’ll see what choice we make on Thursday.’
