Well-rated Brest health students, but failed after the oral exams – Brittany

If they had taken the old medical or dental competition, which consisted only of writings, these three students would have been successful. But, at the end of the two oral tests of the specific health course (Pass), their grades made them switch to the side of the excluded. They would be about twenty in this case. The reform was pinned down by a Senate report, last May.

Orals weigh for 70% of the total marks

This year 2021 is definitely very complicated for health students and for the University of Western Brittany. An appeal following malfunctions during the online English tests was won, on June 11, by several students of the specific health course (Pass). This time, it is other students of this first year who have consulted a lawyer and are considering appealing.

“In Brest, the two oral exams represent 70% of the total marks for the year, a percentage which varies in other universities. We do not know what is the scale of the motivational oral. We are listened to for five minutes, then there are ten minutes of questions that relate to everything, including our hobbies, ”lamented three students.

But the adults admitted are exempt from oral exams

If there are no more medical exams, the access system has become so complex that students with good grades can be excluded after oral examinations. The best rated in writing are, moreover, declared “major admissions”, without further examination.

Explanation of Ryan (1), excluded from dental where 19 places were open: “I was well classified, before the 19th place, but after the ninth, which marks the end of the major students admitted”. From tenth place, two oral tests had to be taken, along with 54 other eligible students out of the 273 who attempted this course. “I had a score of 5 out of 20 for the motivation oral, which sent me back to the bottom of the 55 ranking. Others, less well rated than me in writing, were received. “

A complicated license reorientation

Same bitter observation for this student who was aiming for medicine and was in the first 80 ranked out of 767, but after the 50th place, which marked the limit of admitted adults and made it possible to avoid the analysis of scientific text and the motivational oral . At the end of the two oral tests, he finds himself excluded. “I consult a lawyer, but I am afraid that an appeal will harm me, because medicine is my vocation and I hope to retry an admission by way of the health access license (Lass). But here too it is complicated, we cannot necessarily choose the discipline that interests us, only the one where there is room via Parcoursup ”. At the beginning of the year, the Pass student “chooses” the subject called “minor” towards which he thinks he will be redirected in the event of failure: science, math, literature, philosophy, law or geography for example. This year, however, “minor” courses have been canceled due to a lack of teachers available at the UBO.

The final results expected at the end of August

This other student in reorientation, graduated from a business school, obtained good marks in the writing, but a mark of 11 out of 20 in the motivational speaking excluded her. “Yet I am used to exercising, because of my experience. There were two different juries, and one was more benevolent, ”regrets the young woman.

This year’s final Pass results have yet to be released, and won’t be released until the end of August. A difficult summer for the students on the waiting list, who are counting on the withdrawal of receipts in several disciplines and the reallocation of unallocated places in Lass. The UBO presidency contacted did not respond to our requests.
