Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Not long since it was introduced, the iMessage edit feature in iOS 16 was protested. Attorney Michelle Simpson Tuegel shared an open letter asking Apple CEO Tim Cook to rethink the update.
The ability to edit and delete messages is not a new concept, as there are options on other messaging platforms. Meanwhile, iMessage is the iPhone’s default messaging platform so he thinks it has an important role for users to communicate.
Tuegel explained his concern the feature could have a significant impact on victims of violence experiencing harassment and intimidation. Because the perpetrators can destroy the evidence of violations that have been sent, quoted 9to5Mac, Monday (20/6/2022).
For information, Apple gives up to 15 minutes for messages that have been sent to be edited or deleted. Tuegel shared examples of perpetrators being able to send malicious content to their victims and edit it within that time frame to hide the abuse.
It’s also important to note, within 15 minutes the message can be edited multiple times. According to Tuegel, it would be unfair to rely on the victim to take screenshots of the messages within a certain period of time.
There is still some time before iOS 16 is released to the public. So Tuegel asked the company to provide solutions to help victims and reduce losses that could be done with the edit and delete features.
He asked Apple to change the timeframe for deleting or editing messages from 15 minutes to two minutes. Perpetrators are more likely to realize there is a greater risk if the edit time is given less time, as well as being hesitant to delete it in time.
The 9to5Mac page reports that users will be notified if the sender has edited or canceled a message. But do not know the contents of the message before it was edited or deleted. It’s also reported that recipients not using iOS 16 will still see the original message.
