New York City. The fire department community in New York City received sad news: New York firefighter John Knox protected the neighborhood for 38 years – now the 84-year-old suddenly died of the corona virus, as the “New York Post” reported.
Knox succumbed to the virus after weeks of fighting. The now retired firefighter lived in the New York borough of Queens.
Late diagnosis
Know was hospitalized on February 26th with dizziness, coughing, and vomiting. Since he had not previously traveled to a risk area or had contact with infected people, the Knox doctors only tested him for the corona virus on March 9 – the diagnosis came back last Friday. At this point, Knox had been on a ventilator for ten days. Knox also failed to qualify for an experimental drug due to kidney failure, and he died, according to the New York Post.
Before Knox worked for the New York Fire Department from 1960 to 1998, he worked for the New York Police and the US Navy in Korea, among others.
A respected firefighter
Knox was a popular member of the fire service community and was highly valued by his former colleagues. “We are grateful for the memories and for his service to this city and this Union,” said FDNY Firefighters Association President Gerard Fitzgerald in response to Knox’s sudden death.
