Well-known Americans boycott Facebook for ‘false information and hate’

Dozens of American celebrities are not posting to Facebook and Instagram today in protest against spreading “hate, propaganda and false information” through social media.

Among others actor Leonardo diCaprio, singer Katy Perry and reality stars The Kardashians participate in the boycott, which lasts 24 hours. “I can’t stand by as these platforms turn a blind eye to groups and posts spreading hateful disinformation,” Perry writes on Instagram.

Actor Ashton Kutcher, who has millions of followers and is also part of the boycott, says “these tools are not built to spread hatred and violence.”

No Ads

The boycott is an initiative of the # StopHateforProfit campaign, which was founded by American civil rights movements and now has the support of thousands of companies and major civil rights organizations. They called on companies this spring not to advertise on Facebook and Facebook subsidiary Instagram in July. The lack of ad revenue would force the social media platform to change policy.

Many large companies, such as Starbucks, Unilever and Coca-Cola responded to this call, because they believe that the social network does too little against racism and hate speech, but also against the spread of disinformation about corona and the presidential elections.
