Top 14 (1st day). RC Vannes – Toulouse: 18-43
It was the meeting that all of Britain had been waiting for for three months. The first game in the history of RC Vannes in the Top 14, what’s more opposite the great Stade Toulousain and its international military.
The trick didn’t happen. Game Pro D2full of good intentions, against a red and black wall that hit the ground running, who ruled the main events of Vannes and knew how to punish as soon as he had the chance.
The first act of the game summed up the rest of the game well. In the beginning, RCV was punished stupidly. 2’30 of Toulouse possession continued in the British 22m until Thomas Ramos tried (3′, 0-7). Welcome to Top 14! A competition where everything goes faster, everything is more precise, everything is more intense than Pro D2.
And where, unlike his old chamber, every mistake is paid in money. Despite all their generosity, the residents of Vannes were far too predictable, especially when it came to getting rid of the opposition. They had difficulty getting out of the pressure of Ugo Mola’s team: Lafage sent a direct ball in (16′), Filipo Nakosi attacked forward when he was not under pressure (47′).
Vunipola gets RCV’s first try in the top 14
The Jean-Noël Spitzer Team, canceledhe did not find efficiency in the scoring zones that was his strength last season in Pro D2 (26′, 28′, 38′), even with a stolen touch in the Toulouse 22m (47′). And after three fruitless possessions near the Stadion goal, they were punished with three quick attacks (29′, 61′, 80′).
But not everything is going to be thrown away, far from it. We should not forget that it was the reigning champion who was against us and the one he favored for his own success. The British were generous like their captain Francisco Gorrissen who, after a calm start to the game, looked his opponents in the eyes. The Argentinian in particular offered himself a formidable offensive tool, followed by an angry drive (14′).
Mako Vunipola confirmed that he had not come to Brittany to retire early. The 33-year-old English pillar, who was strong in the scrum, was the first to sing the revolution by snatching the ball from the hands of a Toulouse player (9′), before scoring the first goal in the top 14 in RC Vannes history (53′). Reported a bit later by Christiaan van der Merwe (65′).
After this “clash of champions” in gala style, the people of Vannes will continue to study the Top 14. They have 25 days left to achieve the most amazing feat in their history: offering the second season in a row in the Top 14.
