Welcome, in Trieste the situation is dramatic and out of control, especially for asylum seekers

TRIESTE – Until last Saturday, September 28 – reports the refugee office of Italian Solidarity Consortium – there are at least 180 people seeking asylum without reception, abandoned on the street: there are 164 single men, 4 single women and 11 people who are members of families (3 nuclei), including 6 minors. The waiting times to enter the first reception system have reached almost 30 days (the oldest reception requests date back to 4 September). We have thus quickly arrived at a picture which, even in numerical terms, is not far from the situation existing before the closure of the Silos (which took place on 21 June), with the difference that not even that degraded place in which people took shelter in shelters improvised tents is now more accessible and people, exposed to the elements, seek shelter in even worse situations.

No provision from the Municipality of Trieste. The Municipality of Trieste has not started, nor planned, the sewerage upgrading works for the Campo Sacro hostel. Added to this is the ridiculous story of the temporary housing modules, which the Prefecture should have installed in the same area to increase the capacity to around 150 places (today it is 78), but which remained unused because they were unsuitable in the event of a Bora. In the meantime, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has not collaborated with the relevant bodies to find solutions, even temporary ones.

A disheartening picture of inefficiency. The result is a disconcerting picture of institutional inability, inertia and indifference. The situation is made even more serious by the absence of any intervention for migrants who do not stop in Trieste because they are in transit: around 50-60 people per day, a modest and entirely manageable number. Among these there are also families who would only need “low threshold” hospitalization. The local authorities, however, refuse to set it up, despite the associations having offered their collaboration. Thus, every day and especially every night, dozens of people, including minors, are abandoned on the streets.
