The Renault 5 makes people fall in love again with the battery version ready to conquer the market. Born in 1972, the first model quickly became a true icon, a sort of sex symbol of the Italian automotive scene. Today, with the automotive world now decided on the electric transition, Renault 5 returns in the E version, with the same determination as always and a super modern battery engine.
The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric boldly responds to the social and environmental challenges of its times: energy efficiency, sustainability and reduced carbon footprint. In a pre-show of the Geneva Motor Show held in Paris, we discovered it in preview, appreciating from the first impact its clear resemblance to the old version with the combustion engine. The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric (this is its full name) is heart-stopping. Made in full harmony with the Renaulution strategy, it is 100% made in France and will be available on the market from next September. “When it was born in 1972, the Renault 5 marked an era with its modern and non-conformist design: plastic fenders, six bright colors and headlights that gave it a jaunty, almost human look – says Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault Group – was a breath of fresh air, a symbol of freedom and joy of living.” This is how Renault’s number one describes the latest addition. “Pop colours, vertical rear lights, sculpted fenders, colored roof profiles, bonnet grille and much more: Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is a continuous nod to the ‘brat’ that preceded it – continues De Meo – Renault 5 E -Tech Electric is not a car like the others, it is an iconic car that will open a new path for Renault”. Externally, as mentioned, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is very similar to its ancestor. Among the most interesting innovations is the bonnet, which contains a digital display with the number 5 which turns off as the battery runs out. Renault 5 E-Tech Electric has a flat floor and long wheelbase (2.54 m).
Interestingly, the new bidirectional alternating current battery charger compatible with V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technologies. This system allows the vehicle to become the true protagonist of the energy ecosystem through Mobilize services, feeding decarbonized electricity back into the grid when needed. The engine will be available with three power levels: 110, 90 and 70 kW. Renault 5 E-Tech Electric has a range of up to 400 km in the WLTP cycle. There are two types of lithium ion batteries available: 52 kWh and 40 kWh. Prices not yet declared, but Renault aims to put it on the market for less than 25,000 euros.
