Mysterious radio signal
Since 2007, researchers have received very bright, very strong radio signals that last only a few milliseconds. This mysterious flash is called a fast radio burst (FRB) and appears to have come from billions of light years away.
The scientists also managed to catch repeated FRBs. The FRB flashes six times in a row, the second signal ever seen and which can help them solve the mystery.
Infrared Streams from Outer Space
Neutron stars are extremely dense objects that form after the death of ordinary stars. Typically, neutron stars emit radio waves or higher-energy radiation such as X-rays. However, in September 2018, astronomers discovered a long stream of infrared light emanating from a neutron star 800 light years from Earth.
This is something that has never been observed before. The researchers proposed that the dust disk surrounding the neutron star could produce a signal, but a final explanation has yet to be found.
Planet Rogue with Aurora
The planet Rogue floats through the galaxy, which has been ejected from its parent star by the force of gravity. One of the strangest of these objects is known as SIMP J01365663 + 0933473. It is a planet-sized object 200 light years away whose magnetic field is more than 200 times stronger than Jupiter’s. Its magnetic field is strong enough to produce flickering auroras in its atmosphere, which can be seen with radio telescopes.
Haumea
This dwarf planet orbiting the Kuiper Belt outside of Neptune is a unique object. Haumea has a strange elongated shape. Haumea has two months. One day there only lasts 4 hours, making it the fastest rotating large object in the solar system.
However, in 2017, Haumea got even stranger when astronomers watched it pass in front of a star and noticed a very thin ring, a thin ring orbiting around it, likely the result of past collisions.
