Disgraced Mogul Weinstein Hospitalized, Lawyer Cites “Alarming” Medical Needs
Former film executive Harvey Weinstein, facing a retrial for rape charges, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan Monday following an urgent medical evaluation at Rikers Island jail.
Weinstein’s attorney, Imran Ansari, disclosed that the 72-year-old was transported due to "an alarming blood test result that requires immediate medical attention." He stated, "It is expected that he will remain there until his condition stabilizes."
Ansari further emphasized the severity of the situation, claiming "His deprivation of care is not only medical malpractice, but a violation of his constitutional rights."
The incident comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by Weinstein’s legal team alleging substandard medical care at Rikers Island. The lawsuit highlights Weinstein’s various health issues, including chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes, arguing that he hasn’t received adequate treatment for these conditions.
In a statement to the media Ansari painted a grim picture of Weinstein’s conditions at Rikers, saying “When I last visited him, I found him with blood spatter on his prison garb, possibly from IV’s, clothes that had not been washed for weeks, and he had not even been provided clean underwear — hardly sanitary conditions for someone with severe medical conditions."

Last week, a federal judge raised serious doubts about the safety and treatment of detainees at Rikers Island, indicating a possible federal takeover of the system due to "unconstitutional danger."
This latest development adds another layer to the existing controversies surrounding Weinstein. The disgraced movie mogul was initially convicted of rape in New York in 2020, but that conviction was overturned earlier this year by the state’s highest court. A retrial is scheduled for 2025. Throughout his legal battles, Weinstein has maintained his innocence.
Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s publicist, echoed his legal team’s concerns, stating,

“Mr. Weinstein, who is suffering from a number of illnesses,
including leukemia, has been deprived the medical attention that someone in his medical state deserves, prisoner or not. In many ways, this mistreatment constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.”
The incident at Rikers Island sheds light on the ongoing debate about prison conditions and the quality of healthcare provided to inmates, particularly those with complex medical needs.
