Suara.com – Many people have complained about the addition body weight the result of being at home all the time pandemic. This weight gain not only increases obesity rates but also diabetes type 2.
Launching from India Express, the lockdown has increased the higher risk of contracting type 2 diabetes. This is stated in a study from the UK published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
The study analyzed people under the age of 40 who were enrolled in the National Health Service’s (NHS) Diabetes Prevention Program. They had seen the biggest weight difference and gained 8 pounds (4kg) on average.
The NHS estimates that an increase in body weight of one kg, or 2.2 pounds, can increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes by about 8 percent.

“The pandemic has changed every part of our lives and is taking a toll on our minds and bodies, with thousands paying a heavy price, and many gaining weight during the lockdown,” said Dr Jonathan Valabhji, NHS national clinical director for diabetes and obesity.
“Weight gain also means an increased risk of type 2 diabetes which is linked to many common cancers, blindness, amputations as well as heart attacks and strokes.”
Type 2 diabetes is a complex condition with multiple risk factors that include age, family history, and ethnicity. Living with obesity is the single biggest risk factor, and accounts for 80-85 percent of a person’s risk of developing the condition,
“This study shows that during the pandemic, there may be weight gain in people who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is worrying because it could cause the rate of the condition to rise even more sharply downwards,” said Dan Howarth, Head of Care at Diabetes UK.
