Weerg Enhances CNC Machining with AM-Flow Automation

Key Takeaways:

  • Weerg, an Italian CNC machining service, integrates AM-Flow’s automated production line.
  • The integration aims to improve workflow efficiency, traceability, and reduce manual handling.
  • The new system includes AM-Feed,AM-Vision,AM-Sort,and AM-Quality modules.
  • Weerg anticipates increased capacity for high-volume production without sacrificing quality.

Streamlining Production Through Automation

Milan, Italy—Weerg, a prominent Italian CNC machining service provider, is adopting a fully integrated production line from AM-Flow, a Dutch company specializing in 3D post-processing automation. This strategic move is designed to enhance workflow efficiency, improve traceability, and significantly reduce manual handling across Weerg’s operations.

By incorporating advanced identification, quality control, and sorting technologies,Weerg seeks to optimize its post-processing capabilities. This initiative underscores the company’s dedication to automation, which is expected to boost scalability and ensure precision throughout its manufacturing processes.

Matteo Rigamonti, founder of Weerg, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation: Our goal at Weerg has always been to push the boundaries of digital manufacturing. By implementing AM-Flow’s automated production line, we are not onyl increasing efficiency but also ensuring consistent quality and traceability, which is crucial for our customers and our growth.

System Deployment and Expected Benefits

The implementation of the AM-Flow system at Weerg will occur in two phases, integrating two AM-Feed, two AM-Vision, two AM-Sort, and one AM-Quality module. These additions are projected to minimize failures and associated costs, accelerate production speeds, enhance part tracking, and introduce statistical process monitoring to maintain product quality.

Data-driven automation will standardize manufacturing processes, supporting large-scale production with enhanced efficiency. This integration aligns with the broader industry trend toward digital transformation, as companies seek scalable solutions to meet increasing demand.

Marion Timmermans, commercial director of AM-Flow, highlighted the significance of this partnership:

By integrating AM-Flow’s technology, Weerg is taking a major step in scaling their operations efficiently while ensuring high-quality output. This partnership highlights the growing demand for automation in additive manufacturing, enabling companies to move from manual, labor-intensive workflows to fully data-driven, scalable production lines.

Previous Automation Initiatives at Weerg

In 2023, Weerg announced the successful streamlining of its 3D printed component post-processing, achieving a cycle time reduction of over 50%. This was accomplished through the integration of advanced post-processing systems from AM Solutions, the 3D printing division of the Rösler Group.

The implementation of the S1, S2, and C1 systems, along with an HP jet Fusion 5200 3D Automatic Unpacking Station (developed in collaboration with HP), significantly increased automation, reduced labor requirements, and improved product quality. These enhancements demonstrated the potential for scaling and industrializing post-processing in additive manufacturing.

David Soldan, head of AM Solutions – 3D Post-Processing Technology, and Volker Löhnert, managing director of Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH, emphasized their collaborative approach:

We are speaking and cooperating with some of the world’s leading printer manufacturers to understand their thinking.

soldan also highlighted AM Solutions’ focus on automated post-processing solutions that integrate multiple steps into a single system. This approach reduces capital investment and equipment footprint while simplifying workflow, making additive manufacturing more viable for large-scale production.

Industry-Wide Trends in Post-Processing Automation

Other companies are also making strides in automating post-processing:

  • PostProcess Technologies has partnered with Farsoon Technologies to streamline powder removal in Polymer Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) 3D printing, targeting the European and North American markets.
  • CRP Technology has unveiled innovative post-processing solutions combining Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Vapor Smoothing, and CNC machining to enhance the quality of its Windform composite materials for industries like motorsport and aerospace.
